Ngamba Island is now 80% powered by renewable energy, significantly reducing our carbon footprint and operating costs β a major step toward self-sustainability.
In a landmark achievement for sustainability, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary has completed the installation of a state-of-the-art solar power system, generously funded by our partners at SolarEnergy Uganda.
The new system provides 80% of the islandβs electricity needs, powering our veterinary clinic, food storage facilities, staff quarters, and eco-lodge. This represents a dramatic reduction in our reliance on expensive and environmentally harmful diesel generators.
Environmental Impact
The transition to solar energy eliminates approximately 15 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. For a conservation organization, practicing what we preach about environmental stewardship is essential.
Cost Savings
We estimate annual fuel cost savings of approximately $20,000 β funds that can now be redirected to our core mission of chimpanzee welfare and conservation.
