In partnership with the Uganda Biodiversity Fund (UBF) we are proud to announce the launch of a transformative 12-month initiative: “Securing Communal Lands, Restoration and Avoided Degradation for Sustainable Livelihoods.”
This project will focus on restoring 100 hectares of degraded forest landscapes within the Albertine Graben, specifically linking Budongo Central Forest Reserve with the Kasongoire Forest Reserves. Spanning the sub-counties of Kitoba, Nyantonzi, and Budongo, the project secures vital migratory corridors for chimpanzees, ensuring genetic flow and preventing local extinction.
Conservation Meets Human Welfare
Beyond biodiversity, the initiative will address the intersection of conservation and human welfare. By promoting sustainable livelihoods and establishing a community-based conservation finance model, the project intends to reduce forest dependence while enhancing agricultural resilience. Healthy corridors stabilize local microclimates and protect the water sources upon which Masindi and Hoima communities rely.
Aligned with National Goals
This holistic approach aligns with Uganda’s National Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy and International Net Gain standards. By integrating participatory mapping and robust ecological monitoring, the project will ensure that both the chimpanzee populations and the local communities thrive in a shared, resilient ecosystem for generations to come.
