The Challenge
As human populations expand further into forested areas, conflicts with wildlife increase. Chimpanzees may cross into human settlements to raid crops, which can tragically lead to retaliation by local farmers. Finding peaceful coexistence is critical to the survival of the species.
Our Collaborative Solutions
Community Education
Intensive programs teaching safe behaviors and deterrence methods around wild chimpanzees. We train local leaders to become HWC first-responders in their villages.
Alternative Livelihoods
Supporting sustainable ventures — mushroom cultivation, beekeeping, energy-efficient stoves — that reduce economic dependence on vulnerable forest resources.
Buffer Zones
Strategically implementing physical buffer zones (like tea plantations) between farms and deep forests to deter ape crossings naturally and protect crops.
Rapid Response
Our field teams respond quickly to conflict incidents, mediating between affected farmers and working to prevent escalation and retaliatory harm to wildlife.
