Global 24-Hour Conservation Event • Main Event: October 6, 2026
We are thrilled to announce that Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is officially taking part in Giving Day for Apes 2026 — a global 24-hour campaign dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the welfare of our closest living relatives.
Early giving officially opened on September 15th, building momentum toward our main 24-hour global giving event on October 6th, 2026. Together with friends, partners, and wildlife champions across the globe, we are aiming to raise $40,000 to provide vital nutrition, lifelong sanctuary, and specialized veterinary care for the 53 orphaned and rescued chimpanzees who call Ngamba Island home.

What is Giving Day for Apes?
Giving Day for Apes is an international 24-hour campaign organized annually by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). It unites ape sanctuaries, rescue centers, and conservation organizations from Africa, Asia, and North America under a common purpose: raising vital resources and awareness for apes who cannot survive in the wild without protected care.
For Ngamba Island, this campaign is essential. Many of our resident chimpanzees were confiscated from poachers, survived the illegal pet trade, or were orphaned through habitat loss across Uganda. Because they cannot be released back into the wild, Ngamba Island provides a secure 100-acre tropical rainforest island sanctuary where they roam freely, climb, socialize, and thrive with dignity.
How Your Contribution Powers Daily Sanctuary Life
Caring for 53 active, intelligent chimpanzees is an immense daily commitment:
- Over 1 Ton of Fresh Food Daily: Each adult chimpanzee consumes approximately 20 kilograms of nutritious fruits, leafy greens, posho, and seeds every single day, brought by boat across Lake Victoria.
- Expert Veterinary Medicine: Routine health examinations, dental interventions, vaccinations, and specialized geriatric care for our aging chimps.
- Enrichment & Psychological Welfare: Daily puzzles, nesting materials, and stimulation designed by our primate behavior specialists.
- Dedicated Staff & Caregivers: 24/7 care provided by experienced Ugandan caregivers and veterinarians who share close bonds with every chimpanzee.
