Meet Our Chimpanzees

Born around 1991. Afrika was confiscated from a market in Kampala in 1991. He arrived at the sanctuary in 1998. He is a high-ranking male who is respected by others.

Asega is a very active male who loves to display. He is close friends with the alpha males and supports them in maintaining order.

Bahati is a resilient member of the community, known for her adaptability and strong social bonds within the group.

Baluku is a quiet male who generally keeps to himself but enjoys grooming sessions with his favorite females.

Baron is the brother of Baluku. He is more outgoing than his brother and enjoys playing with the younger chimps.

Becky is a high-ranking female. She is confident and assertive, ensuring she gets access to the best food and resting spots.

Billi was rescued from a bar in Kampala. He is a gentle male who avoids conflict but will defend his friends if necessary.

A playful young chimp, full of energy and curiosity as he explores his island home under the watchful eyes of the community.

Bolly is an integral part of the Ngamba family, contributing to the rich social tapestry of the sanctuary.

Rescued from Kasese. Bwambale is a strong climber and spends much of his time in the high canopy of the forest.

Cindy is a clever female who is very good at using tools to fish for termites or crack nuts in the forest.

Cocoa has a dark face and a gentle personality. She is often seen carrying around "dolls" made of leaves or stones.

Born around 1997. Connie is a very caring female who often adopts and cares for younger, newly arrived chimpanzees, acting as a surrogate mother.

Born at the sanctuary (a rare occurrence due to failed contraception). Eazy is full of energy and is the future of the group.

Eddie was confiscated from a border town. He is a very social male who gets along with almost everyone in the group.

Ikuru is a shy female who prefers the company of a few close friends rather than large groups.

Indi is known for her distinct vocalizations. She is very expressive and let everyone know how she feels.

Kalema was rescued with a snare injury. Despite her past trauma, she is a resilient and playful member of the community.

Katie is a very observant chimp. She learns quickly by watching others and is often the first to solve new puzzle feeders.

Her name means "One who has suffered". She was very sick upon arrival but has made a miraculous recovery.

Kidogo is small in size but has a big personality. She is not afraid to stand up to larger chimps if she feels wronged.

Kikyo is a beautiful female with a calm demeanor. She loves grooming and being groomed by the alpha males.

Kisembo is a very active male. He loves running along the fence line and displaying his strength to visitors.

Kyewunyo means "Surprise". She is unpredictable and keeps the caregivers on their toes with her antics.

Maisko is a gentle giant. He is large and powerful but uses his strength to protect the younger members of the group.

Mawa is known for his distinct face. He is a bit of a loner but is respected by the other males.

Born around 1998. Medina was confiscated from a trader in South Sudan. She arrived at Ngamba in 1998. She is a very intelligent female who knows how to get what she wants.

Megan is a sweet female who loves interacting with the caregivers through the mesh. She is very affectionate.

Minni is small and quick. She is excellent at stealing food from the slow eaters and running away before they notice.

Nagoti is a very social female. She is often the center of a grooming cluster and has many friends.

Nakuu is a quiet and observant female. She prefers to stay on the periphery of the group and watch the drama unfold.

Namukisa means "Luck". She was lucky to be rescued and has thrived in the sanctuary environment.

Nani is a playful female who loves to wrestle with the juvenile males. She has a lot of energy.

Natasha is highly intelligent. She has been known to escape enclosures in the past, earning her the nickname "Houdini".

Ndyakira is a survivor. He overcame severe illness as an infant and is now a healthy sub-adult male.

Nkuumwa means "I am being protected". He was an orphan who needed extra care and has grown into a secure adult.

Born around 1997. Oketch is known for his large size and gentle nature, though he can be assertive when necessary. He loves food!

Pasa is a very vocal chimp. You can always hear him pant-hooting when food is arriving.

True to her name, Peace is a very calm chimp. She avoids fights and is friends with everyone.

Rambo acts tough but is actually quite sensitive. He relies on his alliances with older males for status.

Robbie is a mischievous male. He loves splashing water at the caregivers and stealing cleaning brushes.

Named after a major donor. Ruparelia is a confident young male who is starting to challenge for rank.

Rutoto is a sweet female who is very attentive to the needs of others. She is often seen comforting upset chimps.

Born around 1991. Sally was confiscated from Entebbe International Airport. She is a high-ranking female and often acts as a peacemaker during conflicts.

Sara is an adventurous climber. She spends most of her day high up in the trees foraging for leaves.

Sophie is a beautiful chimp with a very expressive face. She is a favorite among photographers.

Born around 1997. Sunday was confiscated from a circus. He is very bipedal (walks on two legs) often and is known for his unique intelligence.

Tamtam is another cherished member of our community, known for her engaging personality and interactions.

Born around 1997. Tumbo means "Stomach" in Swahili. True to his name, he loves to eat and ensures he gets his fair share!

Umugenzi means "Friend". He is a very social juvenile who loves to play tag with the other young chimps.

Born around 1999. Umutama means "Old Man" in local dialect because he looked old when he was young. He is calm but assertive.

Born around 1997. Yoyo is one of the top-ranking males. He is energetic, noisy during displays, and very social with the other males.

RR is a male chimpanzee born on 29 November 2025. He was named on 20 June 2026 in honour of the late Rajiv Ruparelia and his conservation legacy.
